It was a chance encounter. I came across a small article in the summer of 2008 that mentioned the dogs were being rehabilitated and put up for adoption. I wondered how you rehabilitated fighting dogs and would they be placed in home with other dogs and kids? Also, where had they been all this time (the initial raid took place in April 2007)? I started looking into it and the more I did, the more fascinating the whole thing became. I wrote an article for Sports Illustrated about it and the article turned into the book. |

The Power of Wagging Tails: A Doctor’s Guide to Dog Therapy and Healing, By Dawn A. Marcus, MD
Doctors know a lot: how your body’s put together, how the mind and body influence each other, and how to fight many diseases. I got my best education about how to really connect with patients by holding the end of my soft-coated Wheaten Terrier therapy dog’s leash. He offers no sentiments, advice, or explanations. By simply reveling in the moment of connecting with a stranger, he produces profound transformations more powerful than most pills can achieve. I may have the title and initials after my name, but my therapy dogs are truly the experts connecting with people in need. They take away fears, stress, and sadness with a seemingly simple smile, thoughtful gaze, and wagging tail. |

Pit Bulls: Villains or Victims? by Blair Boucher
Discrimination is still legal in this country. And according to Blair Boucher, breed-specific legislation (BSL) is widely accepted by many areas. Boucher explains, “One fact that I think many people fail to acknowledge—and that Pit Bulls: Villains or Victims? drives home—is that both the American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA) and the Center for Disease Control (CDC) have long warned against breed-specific legislation.” She goes on to call BSL an irresponsible approach that will not create safer communities. Further, Boucher says that standing up against the severe abuse of Pit Bulls and taking a rational and humane approach to safer communities were her motivations for writing this book. |

Chow Hounds by Dr. Ernest Ward, Jr.

"Dogs are more like us than we may realize. Not only do they share our love for food, but just like us, they are at risk for obesity. In fact, obesity affects more than 50 percent of this country’s canine companions, which significantly increases their risk of developing heart disease, arthritis, and thereby decreasing their expected lifespan†says Dr. Ernest Ward, Jr. |

Here at American Dog we're all about the dogs, naturally. So, we ask, is there a better way to show your commitment to mangy mutts and Springer Spaniels than fostering your favorite breed and knowing the little gem will secure a fresh spot in the good-dog zone because of your dedication and tenderosity? (Generosity spiced with tenderness, of course.) |

I am often asked why I started Stray Rescue. I often ask myself that, too. I never devised a game plan or had a vision - it started, I suppose, out of necessity. I do know that 15 years ago, I hated my job as a flight attendant and figured there had to be more to life than asking: "chicken or beef?" |
